Horror writer Shirley Jackson is on the verge of completing her masterpiece when the arrival of newlyweds Rose and Fred upends her routine. Heightening tensions in her relationship with her philandering husband, Jackson decides to befriend Rose, but Rose becomes unsettled by Jackson’s fragile state.
Shirley is an unconventional biographical drama about the author Shirley Jackson (1916-1965). She never received the acclaim she deserved during her lifetime, but in posterity her precise and grim tales of the human psyche have been hailed as groundbreaking. She is a favourite among horror writers such as Stephen King and Neil Gaiman. The Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House have also given people the opportunity to discover her.
